2017 IRS Tax Refund Schedule – 2016 Tax Year
When it comes to filing a tax return, there are a few questions that people care about more than any other – how much am I paying on taxes, how much will I get back in my tax refund, and when will I receive it? Everything else, the say, is just details.
There is no quick and easy answer to the first two questions. However, we can give you a rough idea of when you will receive your tax refund, but only if you file your federal taxes electronically using a software program or with the IRS E-File. Expect longer delays if you file your return on paper, because it takes longer for the IRS to process your paperwork. The tax refund chart below offers more information on when to expect tax refunds.
Important Tax Filing Dates & Refund Dates
When can I file my tax return? The first day to officially file your 2016 tax return is January 23, 2017. However, many tax software programs will allow you to complete your return and “file” it before that date. They will then hold the returns until the IRS begins accepting them.
When are taxes due? You must file your taxes by April 18, 2017. (April 15 is the tax deadline for most years, unless it falls on a weekend or an observed holiday. April 15, 2017 is the observed holiday for Emancipation Day, for Washington DC). You can file a tax extension if you are not ready to file your taxes by the deadline.
How long does it take to receive my tax refund? Approximately 90% of tax payers will receive their refunds in less than 21 days from the day their tax return was accepted by the IRS. Most people receive their refund in an average of 10-14 days.
Are there any expected tax refund delays? Yes. The IRS is required to hold tax refunds for taxpayers who claim Earned Income Tax Credits and Additional Child Tax credit until at least Feb. 15, 2017. Keep in mind it can still take a week to receive the refund after the IRS releases it. So some people who file early may experience delays while awaiting their refund. Refunds should be processed normally after this date. Also note that new identity theft protections and anti-fraud measures may hold up some refunds, as some tax returns may be held for further review.
IRS E-File Schedule for Check Refunds and Direct Deposits
The following tax refund table is based on previous refund tables released by the IRS to help tax payers know when they should receive their tax refund.
When you receive your refund depends on how and when you file.
The IRS moved to the Modernized E-file System (MEF) for tax year 2012. The IRS only issued refunds once per week under the old system. They now issue refunds every day, Monday through Friday (except holidays).
Due to changes in the IRS auditing system, they no longer release a full schedule as they did in previous years. The following chart is based on estimates from past years and should only be used as a rough guideline.
To use the tax refund chart:
- Use the left hand column to look up the date your tax refund was accepted
- Use the middle or right column to look up when you should receive your refund (depending on how you requested your refund – direct deposit or paper check).
If you filed your taxes with E-File, you should receive a confirmation that your tax return was accepted by the IRS. This date will go in the left column. If you didn’t file your taxes electronically, then this chart may not be useful for you for two reasons: you won’t have a confirmation date regarding when your tax return was accepted, and paper tax returns are manually entered by IRS employees, so the process takes longer.
You will also note that this chart covers dates beyond the traditional filing date. If you file after April 18, 2017, then you should file a tax extension request. It’s simple, and can potentially save you a lot of money in penalties. Note: Some military members may be eligible for additional tax deadline extensions if they were deployed or served overseas during the tax year.
Note: The IRS announced the official first day to file tax returns is January 23, 2017. However, in some previous years, the IRS has accepted tax returns early, or delayed the acceptance of returns, depending on technical issues. We will update this article to reflect that information if we hear about it this year. You can try to extrapolate the refund date based on the the below chart.
Opodo Flight Refund (will i ever get my money back).
Ok, so before you say anything yes i should have read the reviews before using these cowboys.
Anyway, I'd previously made a flight booking with Delta via Opodo. Delta then changed the flight schedule so the flights no longer worked for me. I called Opodo and they spoke to delta who agreed to give me a full refund. Opodo confirmed this on the phone and then via multiple e-mails (so in writing) after the fact.
The flights originally cost me £600. I've just received a £170 refund (after 3 weeks of waiting) and Opodo are saying that the airline has looked at its cancellation policy and that's all I am due.
Does anyone know where i stand here? I called Opodo and they said they'd listen to the calls but that its the airline cancellation policy and not them.
Obviously never going to book via them again but wondering if anyone has ever had a similar issue and can give me some good news that there was in the end a positive outcome (and they got there money back).
Loads of people have had similar issues, that's why regulars here tell people not to try and save a few quid by booking with wescrewyou.com and similar. Pleas that generally fall on deaf ears.
These companies are run by despicable scum and skirt the border between sharp practice and fraud relying on careless people who think they are being smart to save a fiver on a ticket since an airline seat is an airline seat.
In your case I would write a short letter outlining the facts including salient points from their emails (which would seem to make your case a slam dunk) and giving them 14 days to act before you issue a claim via money claims online. And then I'd do it.
Having now done a full search on people having similar issues I'm now even more worried that I will have a fight on my hands to get back what was promised to me.
Just for future records of anyone else in a similar situation I will detail the steps I took/am taking here and what eventually happens (fingers crossed).
I've contacted Opodo and they have asked for 72 hours to look into the matter with a promise of an email detailing what action is being taken.
Did you book using a credit card? If so, try filing a dispute with them.
your "fight9quot; is with delta, and not opodo. opodo are purely a booking agent and will have paid delta for your flight.
however, the tickets that you purchased were probably non refundable low cost tickets, and therefore the only amount that you would be legally entitled to would be the apd.
you signed accepting the terms and conditions and then changed your mind.
your cc company may dispute the issue for you, but when they see that you accepted the terms and conditions of delta, i doubt that they will be able to do anything for you.
"however, the tickets that you purchased were probably non refundable low cost tickets, and therefore the only amount that you would be legally entitled to would be the apd."
Depends on the schedule change, most airlines will offer refunds in case of significant changes.
You need to look at the terms and conditions you agreed to, this is the contract. A fully refundable ticket purchased via an agency like opodo is very rare. To give some context, fully refundable tickets are very expensive and can cost more than a. First class one. Are you sure this is what you bought?
The second possibility is the change was so significant that a full refund was an option, how much were the flights changed.
So you need to know the terms of the ticket you bought, you would have ticked a box to say you read the terms and agree to them as well as knowing what terms the agency also levied for processing the refund. Again. these terms you would have ticked and said you read and agreed to.
Are you sure that what you have says a " full refund" and not just a refund. ?
Thanks for the replies. Unfortunately I booked with my debit card (so another lesson learned there).
I checked the airline cancellation policy regarding schedule changes prior to phoning Opodo to see if my ticket could be cancelled. The airline policy stated:
Schedule change is unacceptable to customer:
-New flight does not get customer to final destination within 2 hours of original arrival time.
-Refund through ARC/BSP
-Waiver required: Yes
The 2 hours is applicable in my circumstances. I then asked Opodo about the cancellation. Opodo then put me on hold whilst contacting the airline and came back saying a full refund (minus a booking fee that was not refundable) was available (and they specified the amount).
I then followed up with an email to which they replied:
"We are pleased to advise you that your refund is processing and will be credited to your credit card. The amount of the refund is GBP 585.06 and this should appear in your account within the next 2 to 12 weeks."
I agree that I would have ticketed the "I accept the terms and conditions part" but a full refund (minus some fees) was communicated to me and apparently to Opodo via the airline; which is why I went ahead with it.
As my contract is with Opodo I assume (maybe incorrectly) that what is agreed between me and them should happen regardless of what they then do with the airline.
Thanks again all for taking to time to opine on this issue (just the more replies I get the more I realise that I made a number of poor decisions from the outset re this flight booking. As I said, never again will i try to save a few £ and go though a third party and I will always check the reviews first).
