Best Credit Cards for College Students

Secured credit card for college student

Building a good credit score is an important step for a college student or any other young person. Though having a credit card is a way to build credit, it is not easy for a college student to obtain a credit card without having an established credit history. The good news is that there are a number of credit card offers designed for students. A college student looking to obtain a card and build credit should carefully look at the options available and choose the card that is best for his or her specific situation. While many credit cards offer a variety of perks, including cash back and airline points, the best credit card for a college student may be whichever one he or she can qualify to receive.

Secured credit card for college studentCredit card companies want to establish relationships with college students. The reason for this is simple: college students are likely to have high lifetime earnings and will need financial services throughout their life. By building a relationship early, a credit card company is hoping to work with the student for decades to come. This relationship can generate a lot of money for the company. To facilitate college students, most credit card companies offer special programs for students. These card programs typically offer low initial credit lines, but offer decent interest rates and low fees. Student card applications are generally available on campus from marketers, in bookstores and other communal areas.

Secured credit cards are available to almost anyone regardless of credit history. Secured credit cards work in a similar manner to a prepaid card. The borrower makes a deposit which is then used to create the borrowing limit for the card. For example, a borrower deposits $500 into a secured credit card account making their borrowing limit $500. Over time, the deposited amount is returned to the borrower once they have demonstrated an ability to make payments on time and to use the card in an responsible manner.

Secured credit card for college studentIn many cases, college students can be added as an authorized user on his or her parent’s credit card. Being an authorized user allows the student to have use of the card, but the arrangement may or may not help the student to build credit. If the goal is to build credit, a student should determine whether or not a credit card company will make a report to the credit bureaus if the student is added to an existing credit account.

Another option for students without a credit history to obtain a credit card is through the use of a co-signer. A co-signer can use his or her credit standing to obtain a card for the student. The card will be in the student’s name and activity on the card will generally be reported to the credit bureau’s for both the student and the co-signer.

Citi Forward® Card for College Students Review

The Citi Forward® Card for College Students is a points-based credit card with a variety of redemption options attractive to college students. With competitive interest rates, no annual fee, and no cosigner required, the Citi Forward® Card is a good resource for those looking to establish credit.

Latest Update November 11, 2015

Many college students are just beginning to establish a credit history and often times are required to have a cosigner when applying for a credit card. Unfortunately, you may not have a credit-worthy and willing cosigner at your immediate disposal. The Citi Forward® Card allows college students to receive a credit card on their own. This can be a great opportunity for you to get the credit history rolling without having to worry about finding a cosigner.

Citi Photocard adds an additional layer of security to the credit card by placing your photo and signature on the front of the card. Whether it’s living in the dorms, riding the bus to class, or at a party with some friends on the weekend, college students are often exposed to situations that may make them more likely to misplace a wallet or purse and lose the credit card. In situations like this, or in a worst-case scenario when a theft occurs, it’s nice to have a little extra security.

Not many college credit cards offer a points reward system. The Citi Forward® Card does include a points system and it is designed appropriately for college student purchasing behaviors. For example, for every dollar you spend at a restaurant, you will be rewarded five points. Similarly, every dollar you spend at bookstores (including for textbooks), music stores, and movie theaters is also rewarded with five points. For college students that eat out on a regularly basis, and spend a lot of money on books and entertainment, these points have the potential to add up quickly.

Bonus points when account is maintained

The Citi Forward® Card encourages college students to stay up to date on their account by offering a bonus when the credit account is appropriately maintained. As the cardholder, you will be rewarded with 100 bonus points each billing cycle if your bill is paid on time and the card is under the credit limit. A system like this that rewards good behavior can help you establish responsible spending habits.

Diverse point-redemption options

The Citi Forward® Card provides college students with a variety of ways to redeem accumulated points. Some students may prefer to redeem points for things like gift cards, music, and electronics, while others may be interested in applying rewards to student loans, receiving a statement credit, or by contributing to a charitable cause. If you’re unsatisfied with the redemption options, the Citi Forward® Card has a program called Your Wish Fulfilled, which allows you to receive a unique reward tailored to your specific needs.

Although the Citi Forward® Card allows college students to acquire unlimited points, the points can expire. In order to ensure your points don’t expire, the credit account must be active. Otherwise, your points will expire five years from the end of the month in which they were earned.

Foreign currency transaction fees

The Citi Forward® Card charges 3% per transaction for all foreign currency transactions. It is not uncommon for college students to take some time to travel internationally or to participate in a study abroad program. Budgets are almost always tight for college students, and this little extra fee has the potential to add up to an unexpected cost. There are student credit cards that have no foreign currency transaction fee. If you know international travel is on the horizon, it may be worth it to look into alternative student credit cards.

No introductory balance transfer rate

Some student credits cards allow you to transfer your existing credit balances to your new card at a lower introductory rate. With a minimum $5 or 4% transaction fee, transferring balances to the Citi Forward® Card may not be your best option. There are student credit cards that offer no balance transfer fees, and low introductory rates. For those specifically looking to transfer an existing credit balance, the Citi Forward® Card may not be the best fit.

The first thing thing students need to do when applying for this special card is to go to a bank and find out what their options are. One type of no-credit credit card is the prepaid card that can be created by putting up an extra account with the bank to serve as collateral.

No credit account cards are the ideal cards for people who have no credit history like college students or for people who have not maintained good standing. Cards of this kind can help someone start building a credit history or repair a tainted one.

Secured credit card for college student

Someone with no financial history could face difficulties in getting a loan. A good history can be built starting with a card that has no credit. For someone whose rating has been impaired, this card is the perfect start towards fixing it.

A minimum balance has to be maintained in the extra account that is used as collateral to guarantee payments for the card are kept at a constant. For instance, if you deposit $1,000 into an extra savings account, this means your credit limit is $1,000. You will be using the prepaid credit card just like a standard credit card, but if you are remiss on your payments the amount will be taken from the extra account.

This sort of card is called a secured credit card. There are lots of financial organizations that give no credit account cards. You can apply for these online or personally through credit unions.

Find out if your card issuer reports to all three major credit bureaus. Unless your use of the card and the payments you make are not being reported, you will have no record and you cannot create a credit history or rebuild one. In applying for a card, you may have to pay a fee. Proof of your income could also be required in the form of bill payments or pay stubs.

Young people like college students could find it more difficult to acquire their own much sought-after plastic. A nonexistent credit history is the reason for this, not poor credit. Someone who has no credit history is practically in the same boat as someone with bad credit. Fortunately, there are methods that can be employed to start building a credit history.

A student could get his or her parents to co-sign for a loan. A lending firm’s decision whether to approve a student’s loan or not will hinge on the co-signer’s credit. With a parent who has good credit history as co-signer, a student is more likely to be granted more manageable interest rates.

Another good option is a card you can get from a department or grocery store, or even from a gas station. These outlets usually have less stringent requirements for credit. A card like this is perfect for use of consumers who make frequent purchases at the outlets they got credit from; since it is unlikely they will go on a buying spree because this card can only pay for necessities.

Once you get credit and are in a position to build your credit history, you have to be responsible enough to make prompt payments each month. By building a good credit history, you can have an easier time getting a loan or getting another orm of card in the future.

No credit credit cards are like a second chance granted to people who seemingly have little or no chance of getting credit considering their bad credit history. If you were not the ideal cardholder in the past, get rid of your bad habits and repair your credit history. If you are just starting to build a credit history, do the responsible thing by paying your credit-card bills on time.
