Walmart's Sam's Club Scan-and-Go App May Make Cash Registers Obsolete
Sam's Club, the no-frills membership division of Walmart, has taken a step toward replicating Apple's (AAPL) futuristic shopping experience at its stores in one way: there's no need for a shopper to wait in line to checkout at a cash register.
Sam's Club has recently gone live in all of its 645 U.S. stores with its new scan and go service, Walmart Vice President of Operations Transformation at Sam's Club Shawna Bowen told TheStreet. Scan and go works pretty much as it sounds. While a shopper is in a Sam's Club, they open an app and scan each item's barcode. If the item doesn't have a barcode, it could be easily looked up. The app keeps a running total of the items in the cart. A person can then checkout by paying in the app. They then show the receipt on the phone to an employee standing by the door, known as a greeter, who double checks that nothing has been lifted for free. The service closely resembles how a person checks out at an Apple retail store, with items being purchased getting scanned into handheld devices carried around by employees.
Sam's Club began to test scan and go last August at a location near its home base in Arkansas and in Concordia, Ca. It expanded the test to several more stores in February. Scan and go is also currently being tested in several Walmart locations. Bowen says there hasn't been a reduction in the number of cashiers or cash registers at Sam's Club, despite some early adopters of the app seemingly being turned into cashiers (that don't need to get paid or trained).
Scan and go is the latest example of the world's largest operator of retail stores more fully embracing technology.

11 Costco or Sam's Club purchases that make your membership virtually free
Shopping at warehouse club stores comes at a price: Costco’s basic Gold Star membership costs $55 (and will go up to $60 on June 1), and a basic Sam's Club membership costs $45.
But with the savings from various products and services, there are plenty of ways to make back the fee while enjoying the perks of membership .В
It takes less than one pizza a month for the savings to make up the cost of a warehouse club membership. At Domino's, a 16-inch Brooklyn-style pizza costs $12 to $18, depending on location and toppings. The same size pizza costs $9 at Sam's Club and $10 at Costco. With average savings of more than $5 a pizza, buying eight to 10 pizzas a year would cover the membership cost.
Large photos come with large savings. A 16-by-20-inch canvas photo print at Sam's Club costs $45 , which is $55 lessВ than the $100 price listed on the photo site Shutterfly. Costco's 16x20 canvas prints are $38 , or $62 lessВ than Shutterfly's. Buying just one print would cover the cost of membership to either club.
Both Costco and Sam's Club also carry personalized mugs, mouse pads, and other photo gifts. Custom photo mugs start at $12 at Walgreens and $17 on Shutterfly. At Costco and Sam's, theyВ cost aboutВ $6.50 to $7. Depending on the items, the savings from five to 10 gifts would recoup the membership fee.
Both Costco and Sam's Club sell bundles of movie-ticket gift cards. Costco offers a set of four $25 gift cards to MovieTickets.com for $75. At $25 off the total value of $100, buying two sets would bring the savings just $5 short of the current membership fee.
Sam's Club В sells two $25 cards to Goodrich Theatres for $40. With $10 in savings, buying four sets almost makes back the membership.
In a survey released last year, Costco averaged nearly $0.20 less than competitors at the pump, according to GasBuddy, an app that helps consumers find the cheapest gas. At that rate, a car with a 12-gallon tank would save about $2.38 on eachВ fill-up. Members who get gas at Costco every other week would break even on the membership fee.
Of course, the savings vary by location. Costco was the cheapest place to buy gas in 12 states; Sam's came out on top in seven. And don't assume you're paying bottom dollar at a warehouse club. Double-check price-comparison apps and consider gas-bonus programs from chains such as Kroger.
Buying tires at CostcoВ or Sam's ClubВ can cover the membership fee in savings from tire installation and routine care. The two warehouse clubs ranked first and second in a Cheapism analysis of the best chains for tire installation,В ahead of Sears, Walmart, and three other chains.
Both offer mounting and balancing for $15 a tire. Upkeep for the life of the tire is free, including balancing, rotation, and certain repairs.
Costco В sells sets of $100 in restaurant gift cards for $80. The selection varies by location, but some of the cards available online include P.F. Chang's, California Pizza Kitchen, and Baja Fresh. Shoppers who buy three sets make back their membership fee.
At Sam's Club , some of the gift-card bundles are the same price as the worth of the cards, or just a few dollars less. But the store does offer some deals that include $10 to $25 in savings, including gift cards for Logan's Roadhouse, Buca di Beppo, and Outback Steakhouse.
Savings on holiday cards, save-the-dates, and other photo cards easily match warehouse club membership costs .
At Walgreens, an order of 60 flat cards on photo paper costs $45. At Sam's Club , 60 cards cost $21. Even with a 50%-off promotion, an order of 50 photo cards from Shutterfly runs about $60. Costco В sells sets of 50 for $15. The savings from two orders of 50 or 60 cards would cover the membership fees.
A Victorinox Swiss Army Maverick men's watch with a black rubber band is $450 at Macy's but considerably less at Costco ,В where the price is $230. The $220 difference makes up the annual membership fee four times over.
Buying blooms in bulk for a big event can cover the cost of membership in one purchase. AtВ Sam's Club , a bulk order of 125 roses costs just under $90. That's $59 lessВ than the same order from the online retailer Blooms by the Box.
At Costco , 200 roses (sold as orders of 50) would cost $160. That's $50 less than an order of 200 from the online seller Fifty Flowers — not quite enough to account for the Costco membership fee, but pretty close.
Savings on big-ticket electronics can make back the membership cost with just one purchase. For example, a Samsung 55-inch 4K LED smart TV is $750 at Costco , while the price is $1,000 at Best Buy . В В
Costco's upgraded Executive Membership is $110, but shoppers earn 2% of their (qualified) spending in rewards. It takes about $450 a month to make back the membership fee. Shoppers with the $100 Sam's Plus membership get $10 in cash rewards for every $500 they spend.
With cash rewards alone, it takes about $415 a month to recoup the membership fee.В According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the average family spends about $335 a month on "food in the home." That doesn't count clothes, furniture, electronics, and other items shoppers might buy at warehouse clubs, so crossing either threshold is reasonable.

Warehouse store showdown: Should you join Costco, Sam's Club, or BJ's?
Membership in warehouse stores can save consumers big. But among the big three – BJ's, Sam's Club, and Costco – which one is right for you?
By Renee Morad , Contributor January 5, 2013
According to Consumer Reports, shoppers can save up to 55 percent at warehouse clubs – on everything from bulk packages of toilet paper and frozen pizza to Coach handbags and vacation packages. If you belong to one, you’re probably enjoying the savings and the “treasure hunt” shopping experience – never quite knowing what you’ll find on shelves and pallets.
It’s no surprise that as warehouse clubs open more locations and offer a wider range of items, sales are growing. The $390 billion industry has seen a 137 percent jump in sales from 2001 to 2011, compared to 47 percent for all general merchandise stores, according to First Research.
But which warehouse club is best for you? Sometimes it’s as simple as finding the one closest to home, but if you have choices, you should consider factors, from selection to return policies. We put the big three to the test by comparing 11 factors – from basic membership costs and locations to selection of luxury goods.
Basic membership is $50 a year at BJ’s, $55 at Costco, and $40 at Sam’s Club. If you want to test the waters first, keep an eye out for free trials.
Warehouse clubs offer rewards programs, but they’re not free. Become a BJ’s Rewards member for $100 a year (or upgrade an existing membership for $50), and you’ll get 2 percent back on most in-club and BJs.com purchases. Costco’s Executive Membership is $110 a year and also offers 2 percent rewards – capped at $750 a year. Sam’s Club is experimenting with the idea of a cash rewards program; in a new rollout, Plus members ($100 a year) are now receiving $10 for every $500 spent – which also comes out to 2 percent – capped at $500.
Thinking about shopping at a warehouse club without footing the bill for a membership? Costco is the least expensive: the surcharge to nonmembers is 5 percent. BJ’s is the highest at 15 percent, while Sam’s Club’s surcharge is 10 percent.
Costco and Sam’s Club have more locations than BJ’s. Sam’s Club has 620 locations in the U.S. and Puerto Rico, while Costco has nearly 450. BJ’s has just more than 180.
To see if there’s a warehouse club near you, check out the locators for BJ’s, Costco, and Sam’s Club.
In a Consumer Reports survey, 26,000 shoppers evaluated their experiences at 10 major retailers: Costco, JC Penney, Kmart, Kohl’s, Macy’s, Meijer, Sam’s Club, Sears, Target, and Walmart. Costco was the top-rated store in the survey. Sam’s Club got average or slightly above average grades in all categories. BJ’s wasn’t included.
In another survey by Temkin, 6,000 consumers ranked companies based on customer service. Costco ranked third, behind Amazon and Kohl’s, with 79 percent of survey respondents giving it an “excellent” or “good” rating. Sam’s Club and BJ’s were close, however, at 78 percent.
While this doesn’t point to a clear winner, it’s safe to say the overall shopping experience at any of the big three doesn’t differ much – and doesn’t disappoint.
From Costco’s return policies page: “We guarantee your satisfaction on every product we sell with a full refund. The following must be returned within 90 days of purchase for a refund: televisions, projectors, computers, cameras, camcorders, touch screen tablets, MP3 players and cellular phones.”
From Sam’s Club return policies page: “We offer a 100% guarantee on merchandise and Membership. We will refund purchases in full with a receipt. Click here to view our Return/Refund exceptions. No receipt: We will refund the purchase(s) at the last selling price with a shopping card.”
From BJ’s return policies page: “Items eligible for return must be returned within 30 days from date of shipping. For more information, please see the “Proper Conditions for Return and Credit” section of BJ’s Return Policy.”
So Costco and Sam’s Club have similar return policies, while BJ’s policy is far less liberal.
BJ’s is the only warehouse club that accepts manufacturer’s coupons. BJ’s also has 24-hour flash sales online, promoting deals on items like HDTVs and digital cameras – often with free shipping.
At Sam’s Club, discounts can get even deeper with online auctions. Online members can bid, with all bids starting at $1.
